Your Best Year Ever by Michael Hyatt - Book Review by Charelle Griffith

Thinking about reading Your Best Year Ever by Michael Hyatt? In this review, you’ll find out the key points of Your Best Year Ever: A 5-Step Plan for Achieving Your Most Important Goals so you can decide whether you should read the whole book for yourself.

For years Michael Hyatt has run a highly successful online course entitled ‘5 Days To Your Best Year Ever’ with the aim of helping people around the world to set goals and actually accomplish them. Michael has taken that knowledge and is sharing his 5-step plan for achieving goals in Your Best Year Ever.

The 5 steps form the structure of the book with each step forming a section.

Step 1: Believe the possibility

Step 2: Complete the past

Step 3: Design your future

Step 4: Find your why

Step 5: Make it happen

STEP 1: BELIEVE THE POSSIBILITY

In this section of the book, Michael focuses on helping you to understand the power of your beliefs. According to Michael,One of the biggest reasons we don’t succeed with our goals is we doubt we can”. Michael truly believes that in order for you to achieve anything you first have to believe that you can. Many people have limiting beliefs and as a result, Michael has developed a 6-step process for you to review your beliefs.

STEP 2: COMPLETE THE PAST

In order to move forward in your life, you have to come to peace with your past. For many people, the past can be haunting when you haven’t achieved what you set to out to achieve. However, regardless of what happened in the past you can learn from it and use it to support you going forward. In order to learn lessons for your post you need to “distill the lesson from your experiences”.

STEP 3: DESIGN YOUR FUTURE

Michael believes that “Great result don’t just happen”. Instead, you need to get intentional about what you want to achieve. This section of the book goes into great depth about the importance of writing goals down. Michael expands on the common goal-setting method ‘SMART’ and turns it into ‘SMARTER’, which stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Actionable
  • Risky
  • Time-keyed
  • Exciting
  • Relevant

STEP 4: FIND YOUR WHY

If your goals are big enough then it will take time and work to achieve them. This means you need to have a why to keep you motivated during tough times. Michael encourages you to not only discover your motivation but also to write it down.

STEP 5: MAKE IT HAPPEN

The last step is to take the necessary action. Firstly you need to be committed and this starts with your language. Then Michael teaches you how to use triggers to help increase the chances of you taking action. Then, you are walked through the reviews you should do on a daily, weekly and quarterly basis. And last but not least, you are encourage to celebrate.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, this is a very thorough book in terms of goal-setting. However, given the title, I was expecting something more life-changing, but the techniques discussed are similar to other goal-setting books such as The 12-Week Year.

WHO I WOULD RECOMMEND READS YOUR BEST YEAR EVER BY MICHAEL HYATT
