Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl: And Why You Should, Too has the subtitle 8 Essential Principles Every Investor Needs to Create a Profitable Portfolio and that perfectly sums up what the book covers. Early on in the book, Louann states that female investors tend to:
- Trade less than men do
- Exhibit less overconfidence
- Shun risk
- Be less optimistic
- Put in more time and effort researching possible investments
- Be more immune to peer pressure
- Learn from their mistakes
- Less willing to take extreme risks
And then she goes through each trait and shows how Warren Buffet exhibits that trait too (and why it has helped him to become such a successful investor).
In case you haven’t heard of Warren Buffett before here is a short introduction to him. Warren Buffett is the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and one of the most successful investors of all. For many years he’s been ranked as one of the wealthiest people in the world. As of January 2020, Forbes ranked Warren as the 3rd richest person in the world with a net worth of over 90 billion dollars.
As one of the most famous investors of all time, there has been lots written about Warren and his investing style. As a result, some of the traits discussed in the book are well known. For example, in Chapter 4: Trade Less, Make More Louann talks about how Warren Buffett is famous for saying his “favourite holding period is forever”. Warren is known for investing in companies with a long-term view rather than a short-term focus.
In addition to the 8 traits, Louann adds in three other traits that Warren possess and contribute to his overall success. I won’t mention them here so you still have a reason to buy a copy of the book for yourself.
Then to finish the book there are some Motley Fools Investing Rules. Motley Fool was founded in 1993 with the aim of helping people attain financial freedom. You check out the UK version of the site here and the USA version of the site here.
FINAL THOUGHTS FROM CHARELLE
I really enjoyed reading this book. Usually, I am a bit uneasy about books that make generalisations or stereotype how women behave. However, this book was full of facts and research that made it feel informed rather than speculation.
This book was written in 2011 and as a result, the 2008 financial crisis is mentioned a lot, which may make it feel a bit dated for some readers.
WHO WOULD I RECOMMEND READS WARREN BUFFET INVESTS LIKE A GIRL
I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about investing or already investing. The majority of people would say that Warren Buffet is the most famous investor in the world so having the opportunity to really understand his investing style is no bad thing. This is a great book for anyone who is looking to create the rules or framework for them investing. There is a lot of information to help you really consider what type of investor you want to become, which is essential so you can stay true to your plan and not be swayed by the copious amount of information available.
