How I tripled my TikTok follower count in one day

Want to know how I tripled my TikTok follower count in one day? I started on a TikTok growth journey back in January 2022 and my growth journey has definitely not been linear. After 3 months of very slow growth I managed to triple the number of TikTok followers I had in just one day. Keep on reading to find out exactly how I tripled my TikTok follower count in one day.

HOW I TRIPLED MY TIKTOK FOLLOWER COUNT IN ONE DAY

Why I decided to start using TikTok for business

I started using TikTok properly in January 2022. I had originally got the app in Spring 2020 and made dancing  videos with effects during the lockdown and kept them private. Then in Autumn 2021 I started to post public videos but predominately it would be repurposing my Instagram Reels. By the end of 2021 Intelligent Insider had said that TikTok was the third largest social media platform worldwide. At this point I viewed it as essential to understanding how the platform worked. As a marketing strategist it is essential that I have a good knowledge of all marketing channels a client could want to use. TikTok was no longer an app just for teenagers and for dancing. It was now a serious force within marketing and as a result I wanted to improve my knowledge so I could properly support my clients.

My experience of doing a 30-day TikTok growth challenge

To kickstart using TikTok for business I decided to do a 30-day TikTok growth challenge. I started on Tuesday 4th January and had 30 followers and 132 likes.

For 30 days I posted 1 video every day.  After 30 days (on Thursday 3rd February) I had 75 followers and 394 likes.

It wasn’t exactly the growth I had hoped for, but I had learnt a lot through the 30-day challenge. You can read my full reflections on the 30-day challenge here.

I decided that I would continue for the whole quarter, but for the rest of February and March I would up my output to 2 videos per day.

The video that made me triple my Tiktok follower count in one day

On Friday 1st April I had 227 followers and 1734 likes. My 3 month challenge was over and I was still nowhere near reaching my 1,000 TikTok follower goal. Now I hadn’t chosen 1,000 followers as a vanity metric. On TikTok you need 1,000 followers to be able to add a link on a creator/personal account. For me not having a link meant the platform wasn’t actively supporting my business and so getting to the 1,000 mark was very important to me. However, after posting nearly 150 videos I had gone from 30 followers to 227 followers. It felt that getting to 1,000 was a very long way away.

I’m a big believer in doing experiments in your business, but as a solopreneur I am also very conscious about how I spend my time. TikTok wasn’t supporting the growth of my business and creating 14 videos a week was time-consuming. So now the quarter was up I decided that I would move onto a one post per day Monday – Friday (which is what I also do on LinkedIn and Instagram).

I posted my Friday post and then looked forward to having my first weekend of the app all year.  Little did I know that video would be the video that tripled my follower count in one day!

Here is the video

@charellegriffith 30 day challenge turned into a 3 months #tiktokgrowthchallenge and honestly I’m over it. Going to enjoy a well deserved holiday and hopefully the sun will re-energise me and I might be one of those people who said I took the weekend off and blew up 🤞. #growwithmeontiktok #growwithme #growthchallenge #30daychallenge #tiktokgrowth #femalebusinessowner #smallbusinessowner #solopreneur #solopreneurlife #contentcreation ♬ original sound – Jake

IAs you can hopefully see in the caption I had written

“30 day challenge turned into a 3 months #tiktokgrowthchallenge and honestly I’m over it. Going to enjoy a well deserved holiday and hopefully the sun will re-energise me and I might be one of those people who said I took the weekend off and blew up 🤞.”

And just like I had written that video “blew” me up.

My TikTok follower growth in just one day

3X TikTok follower count growth - 1st April vs 2nd April

The images above are the screenshots I took of my TikTok profile on Friday 1st April and Saturday 2nd April (I had been screenshotting my profile everyday throughout my growth challenge). On the 1st April I had 227 followers and 1734 likes and then on the 2nd April I had 736 followers and 2979 likes. That is a growth of 509 followers.

In just one day that video had gained 10.4K views. My average at the time was around the 225 – 300 mark and I had 1, maybe 2 videos surpass the 1K mark.

Why this video tripled my follower count

1. Other people felt the same (now or in the past)

This video tapped into the sense of community. The comments were filled with other people saying they had been in the same position, but now they had smashed through the 1,000 followers. And then there were other people who were struggling just like me and so felt inclined to comment to share their experience so we could be in it together.

2. It was being pushed to the For You Page (FYP)

I started to notice in the comments people posting FYP. FYP stands for the For You Page and that is the main feed within TikTok. That means that rather than your video only being seen by your followers it was being seen by people who didn’t follow me. No one knows for sure what makes videos get pushed on the For You Page, but my ratios on the video were good. Ratios are the number of likes per view and number of comments per view. This would have resulted in TikTok viewing it as a good video and continuing to push it out.

3. People wanted to be helpful

The text on the video said ‘When you’ve been posting daily on TikTok for 3 months and still haven’t got 1,000 followers so can’t go live or add a link’. This made it super obvious to anyone scrolling post that my goal at the moment was to get more followers and so people followed to be helpful and help me achieve my goals

What I learnt from this experience and my top tips for other business owners wanting to grow their TikTok follower count

1. Experiment with different types of videos As I mentioned this video wasn’t my usual type of video. If your usual style isn’t performing as well as you would like then try something new.

2. Create videos that evoke an emotional response –  If you want someone to take the time to hit the like, comment or follow you then they need to feel something. You need to stop the scroll and make people feel compelled to respond.

3. You really could be just one video away – I know this is the most unhelpful tip and I rolled my eyes so many times when people said this before I posted that video, but it is true. TikTok isn’t like other platforms. Your current following doesn’t impact how many people TikTok will potentially share your video infront of. You just need to have a well-performing video (remember the ratios I mentioned) and TikTok could keep posting you out on the FYP for weeks and weeks.

That’s it. You know now how I tripled my TikTok follower count in one day!

There is a lot of talk on TikTok about how one video can change your business. This video didn’t change my business, but it did drastically change my follower count and gave me a glimpse of the power of TikTok.
