INSIDE THE URBAN MONK

Pedram stats that he has spent his “entire career working to bring the ancient wisdom of the East down to earth for regular people here in our towns and cities.” He is clearly very aware of the issues people face in modern-day life and from the contents you can see the issues he decides to focus on. They range from both mental and physical issues, and as you go through the book there are overlaps in recommendations because some pieces of wisdom can help you in multiple areas of your life.

As you might expect from a book that explores Eastern wisdom there are a number of different meditations within the book. However, in addition to this Pedram also talks a lot about how we are using our bodies, the food we are eating, our connection to nature, our ability to be able to survive in the wild and our connection to our true needs.

For each chapter, Pedram will share a real-life example of someone he has worked with over his career. He explains their situation and how they are feeling. Then after discussing the topic and sharing his advice he then goes back to show what advice the cast study decided to try and what impact it had on their life.

This really helps to show how the advice that has been given can be applied and also with the before and after aspect, it will hopefully inspire you to try the advice yourself.

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM CHARELLE

Overall I thought The Urban Monk was really relatable and packed full of tips and hacks. The topics covered all felt very relevant for modern life. In the beginning of each chapter when Pedram shared the story of someone and I could also see myself or someone else in the story.

The book is filled with advice across multiple aspects of life. However, I think there is so much information that it may mean someone people don’t actually try out any of the tips of hacks. To get the most out of the book I would recommend you look at the contents and choose to firstly focus on chapters that are designed to help an issue you are currently facing. I’d also recommend you have a notebook to make notes on exactly what you are going to try out in your own life.

WHO WOULD I RECOMMEND READS THE URBAN MONK BY PEDRAM SHOJAI, OMD

Early on in the book, Pedram states that about the modern world and how people in urban and suburban areas are struggling. If you are living in a city, or feel caught up in modern life, then this book was created for you. I would recommend it for anyone who is dealing with exhaustion, lack of connection to others, struggling with sleep or weight, feels lost or overly stressed. All of these issues are discussed in the book. I would also recommend it to someone who is open to trying new things. Throughout the book, Pedram shares a lot of advice and some of it may be different to the advice you usually here so it is a book that definitely requires an open mind and a willingness to try new things.
