CONTENTS
Normally I share the whole of the contents of a book to help you get a feel but this book has 69 “chapters” so it would be ridiculous to write all of that out. However, the chapters are grouped into the following sections:
The Prosperous Coach
The Miracle of Coaching
Creating Clients
Fearless Coaching
Deep Inner Work
ABOUT ‘THE PROSPEROUS COACH’
The beginning of the book sets the scene of how Rich and Steve met. Rich at the time had been coaching for a year and was confident in his coaching ability. However, his bank account was empty and he knew something needed to change. He signed up to join Coach Prosperity School. The Coach Prosperity School was ran by Steve and that is how they met. Since then Rich has gone on to become a faculty member at Coach Prosperity School and works alongside Steve.
Coaching is a growing industry and this is discussed in the book. More and more people are being trained in coaching, however, how they use it can be completely different. Steve identifies three distinct practitioners:
- Pro coach
- Part-time coach
- Personal Growth coach
Steve shares that all levels are honourable, but it is important to be clear on what you want to get out of coaching and I would argue the book is aimed at those who want to be a pro coach.
Then the book moves into their strategy for getting clients. Their emphasis is on invitation and referral only and they share 18 disciplines for you to follow, as well as their 4-step process.
Next, the book talks about fearless coaching. This section of the book focuses on giving someone an extraordinary free coaching experience that they will feel compelled to sign up as a client.
Then finally in Deep Work, the focus is on you as a coach and what you need to do in order to become a successful coach.
QUOTES FROM THE PROSPEROUS COACH
“Clients are created not attracted.”
“Great businesses have always known that the magic is in building great relationships.”
“One of the most powerful ways to create new clients is to serve your current clients so powerfully that they never stop talking about you.”
“How can I serve this person so powerfully that they never forget this experience for the rest of their life?”
“Get comfortable feeling uncomfortable and your world will change.”
“It is time to start asking for what you really, really want.”
“You are far closer to everything than you could ever imagine.”
FINAL THOUGHTS FROM CHARELLE
Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Prosperous Coach and it only took me a few days. It is clear that Rich and Steve are both passionate about coaching and the enthusiasm jumps of the page.
However, I have to be honest and say that for the majority of the time I had no idea who’s words I was reading (even though they do tell you). I found the constant switching a bit confusing. The Prosperous Coach was brought to my attention by one of my clients (who is a life coach) because she said she was reading a great book, but he said having a website and marketing your business was a waste of time. As you can imagine that isn’t what a marketer wants to hear. So I thought I better read it myself.
Obviously, I don’t agree with Steve and Rich about not having a website. However, overall their emphasis is on serving, building relationships, having lots of valuable conversations and focusing on the needs of others rather than yourself. These are all things I greatly believe in and I can totally appreciate that this is good advice. Am I 100% confidence this will result in you having a prosperous coaching business? I think it will work for some and not for others. I would worry that some would burn out by helping everyone for free and never turning the people who they offer 2-hour coaching experiences to into paying clients.
WHO SHOULD READ THE PROSPEROUS COACH BY STEVE CHANDLER AND RICH LITVIN
This book is designed for coaches. It doesn’t matter what type of coach you are as long as you believe in the powering of coaching and want to build a successful coaching business. I think this would be a good book for you to read whether you are starting out or already having a coaching business. As I mentioned in my thoughts whilst I don’t 100% agree with everything they say I think it is a great book to help you to question how you are building your coaching business and consider whether a different approach may be more beneficial.
In addition to coaches, this book would be valuable to some service-based business owner who works 1:1 with clients. I’m not a coach, but I found the book valuable because I have a business where I work 1:1 with people. I work with people to change their business and their life and so lots of the advice was transferable.
