INSIDE  ‘STORIES THAT STICK’

In the Introduction Kindra shares a story that happened in a shop in Slovenia to illustrate the power of storytelling and how a good story can make all the difference in business.

Part 1 of the book focuses on exploring why storytelling is so powerful. She shares how storytelling helps businesses to bridge an important gap. She then goes onto share the four components of a great story. By going into detail about these four components it ensures the reader doesn’t find themselves in a situation where they think they are telling a story, but really they aren’t.

With the foundation set Part 2 explores the four essential stories that a business needes. These are the value story, founder story, purpose story and customer story. One by one Kindra goes through each different type of stories, gives examples of how other businesses have used that type of story and then shares how you can use the four components and create your own version of that type of story.

The final part of the book, Part 3, focuses on finding, crafting and delivering your stories. Kindra shares lots of different techniques to help you start collecting stories and then gives you tips for how to choose the right stories from those you’ve collected. Then the focus moves onto crafting your story. Here she uses the storytelling framework to help you structure your story in a way for maximum impact. And then this part ends discussing how to tell the stories.

QUOTES FROM STORIES THAT STICK THAT I LOVED

“If you can sell better, pitch better, recruit better, build better, create better, connect better – you win.”

“In business, there is always more than meets the eye, something bigger at play. Telling the story of that something can transform business entirely”.

“Stories don’t just make us like each other; they make us like each other. They make us similar.”

“To tell a good story, one your audience will care about and invest in, you have to start off strategically by establishing the normal.”

“When it comes to communicating the value of what you offer, you have a choice. Logic or common sense. Strain or ease. Information or story”

‘People don’t buy the thing. They buy what the thing will do for them.

“Sadly, differentiation is more difficult to achieve than we’d like it to be”.

“More often than not, you don’t get a second chance to tell a the story.”

“The customer story is in a world of its own because it eliminates the nagging voice that questions whether or not you can believe a story if it’s the seller telling it.”

“If you ever feel like you don’t have stories, it’s not because you don’t; it’s because our stories don’t sound like stories to us. Our stories just sound like life”.

“A story should be as long as it needs to be”

“It is easy to be intimidated by the blank page or the full auditorium.”

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM CHARELLE

I absolutely loved Stories that Stick. I’ve lots count of the number of times I’ve heard the phrase ‘facts tell but stories sell’, but knowing you need to tell stories and knowing what stories to tell is two completely different things.

What I loved about this book is how Kindra really breaks down the storytelling process in a way that I truly believe everyone can understand. Not only does she share the four components of a great story and four different types of stories, but by taking the time to go through the finding and crafting process every reader should be able to finish the book and start actively gathering and crafting stories.
