HOW TO REPURPOSE YOUR TIKTOK VIDEOS TO INSTAGRAM REELS AND OTHER PLATFORMS.

Should you repurpose all of your TikTok videos?

Before I share how to repurpose your TikTok videos to Instagram Reels and other platforms I want to talk about repurposing TikTok videos in general. If you are creating TikTok videos then it is likely that you have seen others on TikTok talk about how TikTok videos and Instagram Reels are different and you shouldn’t be repurposing.

I absolutely agree that there are differences between TikTok and Instagram, which means that some videos will work on TikTok but appear very odd as an Instagram Reel. There are some people who teach you how repurpose every TikTok (you can do this automatically using software such as repurpose.io).

If you are using all the features of TikTok (reply to comment, stitch, duet etc) then the likelihood is you do not want to be repurposing every video. Some of those videos will make no sense outside of TikTok. Therefore, it is about selecting which videos are a stand-alone piece of high-quality content and will work outside of TikTok.

Personally in my business I’m currently creating 12 TikTok videos per week. I post twice per day Monday to Friday and then once on Saturday and Sunday. Then on average I will repurpose 2 to 4 of those videos.

Step 1. Download your TikTok video without the watermark

The first step to repurposing your TikTok videos on other platforms is having a version of the video without the TikTok. You can set it so that whenever you post a TikTok video it automatically downloads to your phone, but you don’t want to be posting that video anywhere else. Other platforms will know that you created the video on TikTok and limit the reach of the video. Instead, you want to download a watermark-free version of your TikTok video. To download a watermark-free version of your TikTok video you’ll need a third-party piece of software. I personally use snaptik.

  • Go onto the TikTok video you want to download, click on the three dots in the bottom right hand corner and then click on the copy link button
  • Visit snaptik.app and paste the link of your video and download a watermark free version.
  • Save the video to your phone/computer so you can use it for all repurposing

Step 2. Use your watermark-free TikTok video on other platform

You’ve now got a watermark-free TikTok video that you can use on other platforms. You can upload the video in the same way you would with any other video you created outside of the platforms and apps.

Platform A – Repurposing TikTok videos for Instagram Reels

There are lots of similarities between TikTok and Instagram Reels so it is often the first place business owners think to repurpose their TikTok videos. If you are creating videos to trending sounds on TikTok then it is common that the trend will then appear on Instagram afterwards. With trending sounds it is best to wait until it starts to trend on Instagram and then repurpose the video. If you are creating videos that aren’t relying on trending sounds for example talking head videos then you can post these whenever it makes sense for you.

One of the major differences between a TikTok video and Instagram Reel is the caption length. Instagram Reels can have a much longer caption than a TikTok video. In most cases it will make sense to take advantage of the longer caption.

Platform B – Repurposing TikTok videos as Idea Pins on Pinterest

The days of Pinterest just being static images are long gone. Pinterest wants video content too and you can easily repurpose your TikTok videos as Idea Pins. For Idea Pins you are currently limited to having video that is up to 60 seconds, so if you are creating longer TikTok videos it might not be suitable.

When creating an Idea Pin you will have to give your Pin a title. You then have the option to pin your Idea Pin to a specific board, add further details and tag related topics.

Platform C – Repurposing TikTok videos as YouTube Shorts

YouTube is the original home for video content so it has also decided it wants to get in on the short-form video content action. YouTube shorts are limited to 60 seconds in length and as you would expect, but feels weird for YouTube, are portrait style.

Platform D, E and whatever else comes in the future – Repurposing on other platforms

The main 3 ways to repurpose your TikTok videos are as Instagram Reels, Idea Pins and YouTube Shorts, but your repurposing doesn’t have to stop there. Essentially, you can repurpose your TikTok videos anywhere that allows portrait video content to be uploaded. I’ve personally experimented with  using them for video content on both LinkedIn and Facebook.

PRO TIP – Things to consider if you are going to repurpose your TikTok Videos to Instagram Reels and other platforms

TEXT PLACEMENT

If you are going to create TikTok videos that you know you want to repurpose then you could be very careful with your text placement. You want to make sure that in all the places you repurpose the video the text can be seen clearly. Most platforms have overlays which may obstruct part of your video. The best thing to do is once you’ve first decided which platforms you want to repurpose to try a test video where your purposefully put text around all the edges so then you can establish what will be the safe spaces going forward.

CALL TO ACTIONS THAT APPEAR ON THE VIDEO

If you have a call to action that appears on your video,  think about if they make sense in other formats. For example, in TikTok I created a few videos that would have arrows telling people to follow me by clicking directly on  my profile icon (which appears half way up the right hand side of the screen). This made perfect sense in TikTok and was key whilst I was trying to grow to 1,000 followers. You can read more about my experiences growing to 1,000 followers in ‘How I tripled my TikTok follower count in one day‘. However, when I posted that video to Instagram I then had arrows pointing to nothing, so it made no sense.

Another example was to try to encourage people to read the caption. I would include on the video a call to action such as ‘Find out more in the caption’ or ‘Hear the whole story in the caption’. The call-to-action would be followed by a few arrow pointing down emojis ⬇️, but then when I repurposed my videos to LinkedIn that made no sense because the caption is above a video in LinkedIn.

That’s it. You know now how to repurpose TikTok videos to Instagram Reels and other platforms.

Short-form video content is very popular amongst most platforms at the moment so it makes sense if you are investing time in creating TikTok videos that you learn how to repurpose them and ensure that content is working hard for you. Especially if you are putting serious thought, energy and effort into your videos.

I hope you’ve found this blog post useful. Moving forward the key is working out where you want to repurpose your TikTok videos and then having a process for identifying which videos should be repurposed and a flow for the repurposing.

Let me know in the comments how many TikTok videos you are creating per week and where you plan to repurpose (some of) them.
