The benefits of repurposing your long-form video content
If you are looking to repurpose your long-form video content you’ve probably already got an idea about some of the benefits of repurposing. But just incase you need even more reasons to prioritise repurposing your content here are 5 benefits.
1. Reach a wider audience
If you create a long-form video and only post that video to YouTube then the likelihood is it will only be seen by your YouTube followers and people you direct to the video (unless you optimise the video for search). By repurposing your videos into other types of content you will be able to publish your content in other places and that means you’ll be able to reach a wider audience.
2. Save time creating content
A big advantage of repurposing your long-form videos is that it will say you time. This is especially true if you are creating content for multiple places. Having a clear repurposing process will mean that rather than having to start from scratch for every piece of content you’ll be able to have some that is repurposed and some that is new.
3. Reinforces your expertise
Some business owners worry about repurposing content because they think if someone sees the same thing they’ll get bored. In reality, most people won’t see all the different iterations of the piece of content and even if they do it will reinforce that the area you are talking or writing about is your area of expertise. In fact, you could argue that repurposing content helps you to reinforce your expertise without you actually having to talk about the same thing over and over again.
4. Different content formats for different types of content consumers
We’ve known for a long time that people learn in different ways and people also have preferences about content formats they consume. For example, someone who commutes in the car every day might prefer listening to podcasts, whereas someone who works in an office that doesn’t allow you to wear headphones might read blog posts on the sly. By repurposing your video content so that there are audio and text versions you are not only increasing the possible reach but also increasing the likelihood of it being consumed as the person can consume the content in a format they prefer.
5. Helps keep your content strategic
If you are creating content as a business owner, rather than as a content creator or influencer, then you want to ensure that your content is strategic. Each piece of content should have a clear purpose that feeds into your overall strategy. The reality is when you are trying to create multiple pieces of content per week it is easy for strategy to go out of the window and you start posting anything to ‘get something out’. When you are repurposing content you can focus on making sure the original piece of content supports your content strategy and then unless you do something wild all of the other pieces of content will be strategic too.
If you are going to start repurposing your videos you’ve got to make sure that you are creating the right videos in the first place. If at the moment you haven’t been planning your content in advance – this is your sign to do so! Grab my free content marketing plan workbook by popping your details in the form below.
HOW TO REPURPOSE YOUR LONG-FORM VIDEO FOR MAXIMUM IMPACT
Long-form video to audio
One obvious way to repurpose your long-form video content is to strip the audio from the video and then publish that as a piece of audio-only content. This is most commonly done through publishing on a podcast. In fact, there are now many “podcasts” that take a video-first approach. They will create a studio vibe so that they can publish the video and publish the audio separately. So there is no reason you can’t do the reverse.
If you decide that you want to take this approach on an ongoing basis then have a think through some of the call-to-actions you include in your video. For example, on YouTube you might tell people to comment below, but if you have a podcast people can’t comment in a podcast player so it is just something to consider if this is something you are going to do long-term.
Long-form video to long-form text
Another way to repurpose your long-form video content is to turn the video into text and share that text as a blog post, article or transcript. Depending on how you film your videos it might be that you write the whole script out and then you’ve already got the text. However, if you don’t there are now plenty of tools that will quickly transcribe a video for you, such as Descript.
Once you have the transcript you can use it in multiple ways. You could place the video and the text on your website. You could just put the text on your website. You could put the video, with a summary of the text and then have the transcript available to download.

Long-form video to long-form text to shorter text
Once you’ve got the long-form text you don’t have to stop there. There are multiple ways you can repurpose that into shorter pieces of text. This has become even easier with Ai tools such as ChatGPT. You can put that transcript into ChatGPT and then ask it to turn it into an email or a social media post.
Long-form video into short-form video
Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll be well aware of the rise in short-form video across social media. If you are marketing your business on a social media platform that allows short-form videos (such as TikTok, Instagram or Facebook) then you definitely will want to be repurposing your long-form video into a short-form video.
Here the key is to look for specific lines or sections from your whole video that will work stand-online. Then using a tool like Descript you’ll be able to quickly create a short-form video.
Again this is where knowing in advance that you will be repurposing your content is powerful. If you are writing scripts for your long-form video you can be conscious whilst writing the script to think about what the one-liner or power statement will be.
That’s it. You now know how to repurpose long-form video content for maximum impact.
As you can hopefully see by planning in advance and creating a content repurposing process it is very easy for you to take one long-form video and turn it into multiple pieces of content that you can put on your website, share on social media and include in your emails.
So I really hope this is the end of you creating a video, sticking it on YouTube and then moving on to the next piece of content.
I’m all about working smarter, not harder, and that is exactly what you’ll be doing by repurposing your long-form video content into multiple pieces of other content whether that be short-form videos, audio or text.
