INSIDE ‘ PURPOSE BY JESSICA HUIE’
If you haven’t come across Jessica before she describes herself as having had “a successful 20-year career in media, first as a showbiz journalist before shifting into public relations, launching a card company that made history as the UK’s first multicultural card brand stocked in chain stores’”. She also writes that she has “spent almost two decades challenging perceptions – both of myself and others”.
If you aren’t familiar with Jessica already that isn’t a problem as at the beginning of the book Jessica shares some of her backstory. She explains how she grew up on a council estate, was expelled from school aged fifteen and became a mother at seventeen. However, she didn’t let that hold her back. She became a University student and got a job.
Then throughout the book, she walks you through her life, the highs and the lows and how she managed to find her purpose and life authentically. Through her own story, she prompts you to think about your own life.
FINAL THOUGHTS FROM CHARELLE
In the world of personal development and self-improvement books, there are two common ways a book is written. There are books that are focused mainly on helping you to improve and are filled with questions and tasks and points are backed up with case studies and stories. The second is where someone tells their life story and uses their story to highlight questions you should ask yourself. Purpose definitely falls into the second category.
I personally don’t love books that are predominantly focused on a person’s story so it won’t be a book I would rush to read again. However, Jessica is a great writer and so I have a number of quotes from the book, which would definitely refer back to.
“Seeking validation from anywhere outside of ourselves or on the basis of anything other than the values we live from and the contribution we make – who we are to the outside world rather than what we do for a living, what we look like or what we have – is completely meaningless and superficial. What’s more, none of this will bring any of us true joy”.
WHO WOULD I RECOMMEND READS THE PURPOSE BY JESSICA HUIE
Purpose has been written to help people find themselves. Throughout the book Jessica often uses the words purpose, calling, authenticity and living your truth. So if you are someone who is trying to find your meaning in life then this book might be a good choice for you.
I would also recommend it to single mothers and / or ethnic minority women who are looking for inspiration from someone ‘like me’.
