Clubhouse, like any other social media app, whilst designed for personal use can be used as a marketing tool. I personally believe that Clubhouse offers major opportunities to business owners and can read about all of those opportunities in How to use the Clubhouse App to benefit your business.
So if you, like me, have decided to use Clubhouse as a marketing channel then it is important that you optimise your profile.
Why is it important to optimise your clubhouse profile and bio?
Clubhouse differs to most social media platforms. Whereas on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook etc you create content that can be viewed by someone visiting your profile that doesn’t happen on Clubhouse. When someone views your profile, they will only see your profile. They won’t see previous rooms you ran or the great things you’ve said. This means that your clubhouse app has to do all of the work for you and you are limited with what appears on your profile.
What are the different parts of a Clubhouse app profile?
Your clubhouse profile is made up of the following sections:
- Profile Picture
- Name
- Handle
- Followers and Following count
- Bio
- Connected social media accounts
- Nominated by
- Clubs you are a member of
How to optimise your Clubhouse profile and bio
Your Profile Picture
Your picture is the first thing people will see when they view your profile and when you are in a room people will only see your profile picture and first name. Therefore, having a strong profile picture is key.
In order to make your profile picture stand out in a room some marketing experts are advising that you edit your image and use a strong background colour in the same way that I do (as you can see below).
However, I haven’t changed my picture for Clubhouse. This is the same picture I use across all social media platforms, which brings up an important issue – consistency.
If you alter your image on Clubhouse you want to make sure that if someone tries to find you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn that when they find you somewhere else, they can recognise you (this is especially if unlike me you have a common name).
Therefore, my advice is not to change the background of your picture, but to use your original picture and then have a strong colourful border (hopefully a brand colour).
2. Your Profile Name
This should be your full name. As mentioned earlier your first name is shown when you are in a room.
2. Your Profile Handle
Ideally, you should have a handle that is the same as you use on other social media platforms. However, to make thing complicated Clubhouse handles are limited to 15 characters. So if you are someone like me (my full name is 16 characters) then you may need to think of an alternative.
If you use Twitter you can use the same handle that you use there.
Followers and Following Count
This shows how many people you are following and how many are following you. This section is autogenerated.
Your Clubhouse Bio
Unlike most social media apps there is no (or not that I can tell) limit to the number of words you are allowed for your Clubhouse bio. This means the options are endless, but as I said earlier your profile on Clubhouse has to work hard so you want to ensure that you have optimise your bio as much as possible. This means before you write anything you need to get clear on why you are using Clubhouse.
Clubhouse offers lots of opportunities such as:
- Signing new clients
- Growing a community
- Being invited to speak on other people’s podcasts
- Finding guests for your podcast, video show, facebook community etc
- Network with your peers
- Learning from others
- Collaborating with others
Now you are limited to focusing on just achieving one thing, but by getting clear on why you are using Clubhouse it will help you to write a bio that supports that purpose.
Everything is searchable
One of the important things to know about your clubhouse bio is that every word in your bio is searchable. This means you want to ensure that you apply any keyword knowledge you have from blogging or YouTube and use it here. Ask yourself “What words would I like to be found via”?
The beginning of the bio
Now whilst the whole of your clubhouse bio is searchable if someone clicks on your profile picture whilst they are in a room with you the first thing they see is 80 characters or the first 2 lines of your profile. That means you need to make this part of your bio as strong as possible. You want people to instantly know what you do and make a decision to read more.
Also, keep in mind that moderators will sometimes use the first three lines to introduce you in a room so make sure it represents you properly.
Emojis
Not only are words searchable on Clubhouse but emojis are too so you’ll see people have profiles that are filled with emojis. Now you don’t want to use emojis just for the sake of it, but if there is an emoji that is related to something you’ve written and is commonly used add it in.
For example, in my profileI have used the book emoji and podcast microphone alongside me sharing that I run a book blog, book club and a podcast.
No links
Whilst there is no word limit on your bio you aren’t allowed to include links (yep it’s like writing Instagram captions all over again). That means if you want to direct people to somewhere you have to get creative.
Some people will have clear call to actions where they tell people to send them a message on Twitter or Instagram (because you can’t message within Clubhouse) with a word or short phrase. This allows the individual to be able to easily send the link across if that word appears in their DMs.
Other people will type out URLs in their profile but aim to make them as simple as possible
Call to action
There is no way for someone to message you within Clubhouse so you need to make it clear in your bio what you want people to do next. In most cases, people say what they are open to being approached about and make it clear what their preferred platform is.
Connected social media accounts
Clubhouse gives you the option to connect your Twitter or Instagram account. This allows people to easily click on the link and be able to check you out. Make sure that you have at least one social media account connected. If you don’t have an Instagram or Twitter account I highly recommend opening one otherwise you are bound to miss out on opportunities.
Who nominated you
Clubhouse is an invitation-only app and it shows everyone who nominated you. You are able to click on that person and view their profile. This is autogenerated.
Clubs
The last part of your profile lists the clubs you run and are a member of. This is autogenerated.
There you have it! You now know how to optimise your Clubhouse profile and bio.
Creating a strong profile on Clubhouse is key to ensure you are making the most of the Clubhouse. A strong profile will maximise the opportunity of the right people following you and then have good discussions that help you achieve your business goals.
