IMPROVE YOUR WORK-LIFE BALANCE BY SCALING YOUR SERVICE BUSINESS

Why it is easy for one-to-one service providers to struggle with work-life balance

If you started your business hoping it would provide you with a better work-life balance than working for someone else and that hasn’t become the reality please don’t feel bad. Many business owners start with high hopes for an improved work-life balance when starting a business, but often that doesn’t become a reality.

Reason 1: The more you work the more money you make

As a one-to-one service provider, your time is directly tied to income. The more you work the more money you make. And this results in many business owners falling into the trap of saying yes to more work then they’d ideally like to. Sometimes this will be for an ongoing period of time, or sometimes, due to changes in demand, it might be for a number of weeks or months.

Reason 2: You have poor boundaries around when you work

Sometimes a poor work-life balance isn’t about the amount of time someone is working but when they are working. For example, it might have been that originally you said you weren’t going to work evenings, but then you’ve taken on clients who want sessions in the evening. Or perhaps you said you wouldn’t work during August but then you agreed to a retainer that means you’ll be working through August.

Why scaling your business can help improve your work-life balance

As you’ve seen the two major reasons for a poor work-life balance are working too many hours and working at times you don’t want to work. And scaling your business can help with both of these.

I go into great detail about the difference between growing a business and scaling a business here but the main thing you need to know is that scaling your business will mean breaking the direct tie between time and money. You’ll have the opportunity to make more money in the same amount of time. Sometimes this will be capped and sometimes the sky will be the limit.

How scaling your business can help improve your work-life balance: Working less hours

The number one reason scaling your business will help you to improve your work-life balance is because you’ll be able to work less hours and still earn the same amount of money.

For example, right now you could be a coach who only works with people one-to-one. You work with a max of 8 clients per week, with each client paying you £250 for a 1-hour session. This means per week you can make £2,000 from 16 hours of work (taking into consideration some extra work outside each session).

However, if you were to create a group programme or membership it could be that you do a weekly call for everyone and you charge people £100 per week. Once you have 20 people in the group you’d hit the £2,000 per month mark, but for considerably less work. If you kept it strictly to the call you could get that money from working 2 hours, and even if you were to add in some community support you could work 8 hours a week and make that £2,000. That is half the hours you’d be working in the one-to-one scenario for the same amount of money.

And don’t forget you can have more than 20 people in the group so you have the opportunity to earn more, and work less.

How scaling your business can help improve your work-life balance: Working when you want to work

Scaling your business not only gives you the opportunity to work less, but it can give you more control over when you work. With one-to-one services as you work with more and more clients your diary can end up getting very busy, and it’s easy to end up agreeing to work outside of your normal hours.

One of the beauties of scaling your business is that because you are designing the offer you are in control. You set the parameters and people know these before paying. And because they aren’t working with you one-to-one there aren’t the requests for you to work outside of your agreed parameters.

Here’s some ways this could work:

1: You want to have complete control over when you work – If you are fed up with commitments in your diary and would like the opportunity to work whenever you want to then for a scaling offer you could consider something like a digital product, such as a course, templates, e-books etc. With a digital product you are in control of when you create the product. If you want to do it over a week straight you can, or if you want to be able to work on it a little bit each week for a month you can. You have complete control to make it as you please and then once ready make available for sale.

2: You want to be able to take certain times of the year off – If you want to be able to take the summer holidays off, your birthday month, or just have blackout periods in your year then you could consider running live courses or group programmes. With live courses and group programmes there is usually a specific time-frame around your delivery. For example, it is very common for people to run a live version of the courses where for anywhere between 6-12 weeks they are actively working through the course material, doing live calls, offering some type of online community and more.

This model works great for those who want to be able to not work at certain times of the year. For example, if you have a 6-week course and don’t want to work during the school holidays then you can align the 6-weeks with when terms are. This might mean you run it multiple times per year. Or you might decide to run your signature course live once a year and purposefully choose a time of the year that means you’ll be free when you want to be.

3: You are happy to work all year round and happy to have commitments in the diary (as long as they are based around your boundaries)  – If you aren’t looking for extended periods of time off and are happy to have regular commitments in your diary then you could consider running a membership or mastermind. Both of these options usually mean interacting with people in these communities on a regular basis, but you as the business owner are in control of how and when you deliver. For example, you might decide you only want to work in the morning and so all of your calls are done in the morning.

Choosing what is right for you?

As you can see by adding in a scalable offer (whether that be a membership, mastermind, digital product, group programme, workshops, online courses etc) you can scale your service business in a way that helps you work less and have more control of when and how you work. But work-life balance is personal, which is means what is the right option for one business owner isn’t the right option for another business owner.

That’s why it is so important for you to think about what will make you feel like you’ve got a better work-life balance.

Is it:

  • The number of hours you work per day, per week, per month?
  • When you are working?
  • How many commitments you have in your diary?
  • Where you are able to work?

Asking these questions will help you to understand more about the work-life balance you are trying to achieve, and then you can focus on choosing the right scalable offer for your business.

That’s it! You now know how to improve your work-life balance by scaling your service business.

Adding a scalable offer into your business can drastically improve your work-life balance, whilst also enabling you to make more money and help more people. So it really is a win, win, win situation.
