What is an email list?
Before delving into how to grow your email list let’s first discuss what an email list is.
An email list is a set of email addresses that a business has gathered from people who would like to receive emails from the business.
Why your business should focus on growing an email list?
Email marketing is a powerful form of marketing but as with most types of marketing it is a numbers game. The aim with email marketing is to grow an email list with the right type of subscribers. There is no point in growing your email list with random people who aren’t interested in your business and what your business sells. The focus should be on getting as many of the right subscribers as possible onto the mailing list. And as a business only you can identify who is and isn’t the right type of subscribers.
HOW TO GROW YOUR EMAIL LIST: 8 PROVEN WAYS
1. Offer incentives
Let’s start nice and easy with offering incentives. This tactic is commonly used for e-commerce businesses. You’ll often see e-commerce businesses that will offer an incentive, such as free shipping or a percentage off discount when you join their mailing list.
2. Encourage your current subscribers to share and forward to their friends, family, colleagues etc.
Referrals and recommendations work for growing your mailing list in the same way as helping you to make sales for paid offers. The fact is when something is recommended to us, by someone we know and trust, we are more likely to sign up, buy or whatever the desired action is.
So make the most of that opportunity. In your email template have the clear call-to-action to share or forward to others. Some email marketing software has made it super easy for people to be able to share and for others to sign up.
3. Sign up option in your email signature
If you often send out emails on a one-to-one basis then why not include a signup option in your email signature. It surprising how often you’ll email people on a one-to-one basis, but unless you have a call-to-action in your email signature they’d be known the wiser about your mailing list.

4. Create and market lead magnets
Another proven way to grow your email list is with a lead magnet. A lead magnet is something you offer people in exchange for their email address. There are so many different types of lead magnets you can offer from text-based ones such as workbooks and PDFs, to video-based ones such as webinars and challenges, and then other wonderful options such as resource libraries and quizzes.

5. Collaborate with other businesses
When trying to grow your business’ email list you don’t necessarily have to do it alone. You can work collaborate with other businesses. This is commonly done with joint giveaways. A group of businesses will come together with each business contributing something to the prize and then all of the businesses involve will promote the collaborative prize.
6. Share on social media
Do your social media followers know what you have an email list and that you regularly send out emails? If not, make sure you let them know and regularly.
Some great ways to do this include:
- Posting before the newsletter goes out sharing what the focus is and letting people know they can still sign up
- Posting after the newsletter has gone out with a hint to someone that was included and let people know that to not miss out on the next one they should sign up

7. Set up exit-intent pop-ups
If your business has a website you can consider setting up an exit-intent pop-up. When most people think of pop-ups they think of those that make an appearance on arrival or within the first 15 seconds. These can be frustrating as people aren’t even able to have read or seen what they came searching for before being bombarded.
In contrast an exit-intent pop up only appears once someone moves the mouse to leave your website. At this point the likelihood of them having consumed the content they want and therefore me happy to stay informed about your business is higher.
8. QR codes on presentations
If you are someone, like myself, who delivers training or presentations then a tactic you can try is to put a QR code to your mailing list signup form or a lead magnet into your presentation. Increasingly it is becoming standard for speakers to offer their presentation deck as a lead magnet.
That’s it! You now know how to grow your email list.
Once you’ve got your email list set up you want to make sure that your list is continually growing. Using the ways listed above you’ll be able to get new subscribers on your list.
