What is a tripwire offer?
A tripwire offer is an entry-level offer (usually less than £50) that is presented to an individual just after they have signed up to receive your lead magnet or freebie. The purpose of the tripwire offer is to turn a prospect into a customer and also generate additional passive income sales for your business.
Why your business is missing out if you offer lead magnets / freebies but don’t have a tripwire page?
In the world of online business, especially for service providers, it is very common to offer lead magnets or freebies to get people to join your mailing list.
Whilst it is great to have someone join your mailing list realistically the ultimate aim is to have someone be a customer. Once a tripwire page has been created you don’t have to do anything other than continue to drive people to your lead magnet but every time someone signs up for your lead magnet you are giving yourself the opportunity to gain a new paying customer.
So ‘How do I create my first tripwire offer?’
I can vividly remember the first time I made a sale via my tripwire page. I woke up to an email saying someone had purchased the workbook offered on my tripwire page and I remember thinking I had finally achieved the ultimate dream of “making money while you sleep”.
Now whilst there are great tools to make tripwire pages such as ClickFunnels or LeadPages, you don’t need that software to make your first tripwire offer and since I don’t want there to be any excuses holding you back I will walk you through how I created my very first tripwire offer.
To make your first tripwire offer you will need:
- A lead magnet or freebie
- Somewhere that people can sign up for your lead magnet or freebie
- A page that you can present your tripwire offer and buy now button
- Something that can be delivered electronically to be offered on your tripwire offer
- A way for people to pay and receive your tripwire offer automatically.
The tripwire journey
A tripwire offer is presented in a similar way to an upsell. However, the reason it is different is because that person isn’t already a customer. Technically it isn’t an upsell because rather than trying to increase the basket value of the customer you are trying to turn a warm prospect into a customer.
Here is what my tripwire journey looked like
- A person visited my free resources page
- The person clicked on a specific resource (free guide) and entered their email address to receive it
- Once their email address had been entered they were directed to a new page with had my tripwire offer on it and a buy now button.
Stage 3 is the important part. On many people’s sites once you have entered your email details you return to the page you are on or maybe you are shown a page that says go to your inbox to confirm your subscription. Or nowadays you often see people using this opportunity to deepen their relationship with the individual by inviting them to follows them on Instagram or join their Facebook Group.
But by changing this page to be an offer you create your very first tripwire page.
Now I have just told you how what the journey looks like and what you need. As I said before you can use ClickFunnels or LeadPages, but as long as you have a website and an email service provider you can do it. My first tripwire page was made using my website and Mailchimp and it converted (not amazingly, but it worked).
Now you can go off now and start building your tripwire offer, but if you want to ensure it is as successful as it can be – keep on reading.
How to make sure your tripwire offer is as successful as possible
There are 3 things to consider to make your tripwire offer as successful as possible.
1 – Make sure the offer is relevant to your lead magnet
Ask yourself ‘Would someone who wanted the lead magnet be interested in my tripwire offer?”. You don’t want to be offering a lead magnet on writing a business plan and then your tripwire offer is about marketing on LinkedIn. The tripwire should be taking people further than the lead magnet but closely related.
2 – Make sure the price is entry level
Remember people have just signed up for something free. So converting them from a free lead magnet to a £995 course is likely to be difficult. Ideally you want something that is below the £50 mark.
3 – Make sure the prospect knows this is a one-off opportunity and for a limited time
Nothing encourages sales like urgency and scarcity. With your tripwire offer, you should make sure people realise this is a limited opportunity. Very often on tripwire pages, people will also use a countdown with around 15 minutes so there is a sense of urgency too.
That is everything you need to get started making your first tripwire offer. As I said tripwires offers are a great way to speed up the prospect to customer journey and a great way to offset the costs of driving traffic to build your email list. I would recommend every business sets up a tripwire offer page because really you have nothing to lose.
And as your business grows you can offer a different tripwire offer for every lead magnet you have and start creating highly sophisticated sales funnels with the appropriate follow-up email sequence too. But that is for another day!
Good luck creating your first funnel!
