Thinking about reading Chillpreneur: The New Rules for Creating Success, Freedom, and Abundance on Your Terms by Denise Duffield-Thomas and want to know more about the book? Keep on reading to hear my thoughts on the book.

Nowadays it seems like everyone wants to be an entrepreneur. Whether you’ve always had the burning desire to make money on your own terms and run your business or you are just fed up of being an employee that is tired to your desk never has it been more popular to want to be an entrepreneur. However, whilst being an entrepreneur can be amazing many end up not working 24 hours a day, become overwhelmed with stress and not achieving the freedom they originally imagined in the beginning.

Thankfully Denise Duffield-Thomas believes there is a way to achieve freedom, success and abundance whilst being your own boss, and in her book Chillpreneur, she’ll be showing you exactly how to achieve it.

About the author, Denise Duffield Thomas (aka Denise DT)

Before I dive into telling you about the book I think it is helpful to introduce you to Denise Duffield-Thomas. If you haven’t heard of Denise Duffield-Thomas (commonly referred to as Denise DT), she describes herself as a money mindset coach and her signature course is Money Bootcamp.

Having originally self-published Lucky B*tch and Get Rich, Lucky B*tch (check out my review here) Hay House bought the write to republish her first two books and then publish her third book, Chillpreneur. In addition to being an author, Denise is the creator of Money Bootcamp

Inside Chillpreneur

Everywhere you look there is evidence of entrepreneurs who are hustling. However, Denise is here to show you that there is another way, a ‘chillpreneur’ way. She writes  You can get to a place where your business supports your dreams but doesn’t burn you out.”

Right at the beginning, Denise outlines seven suggestions that will help you to become a Chillpreneur. She makes it very clear that these are suggestions and something to aspire to, even though even she doesn’t manage to stick to all of the suggestions all of the time.

The book is split into 4 main parts:

  • Mindset
  • Business Models
  • Money
  • Marketing

Part I: Mindset

Chapter 1: Playing the Game of Business
Chapter 2: Beliefs That Can Limit Your Success in Business
Chapter 3: Millionaire Mindset Lessons

Having followed Denise’s work for a number of years it is no surprise that the first part of the book focuses on mindset. Denise believes that “constantly working on your mindset is honestly the most important – if not the only – think you have to master.” In this part of the book, Denise goes through common beliefs that will be holding you back in business and also give you some new beliefs to embrace if you want to become a millionaire.

Part II: Business Models

Chapter 4: The Keyless Life
Chapter 5: Are You Killing the Golden Goose?
Chapter 6: Two of My Dumbest Business Mistakes
Chapter 7: Five Essentials for a Chillpreneur Business

Part II really gets you to concentrate on your current business model and think about what changes you can make to help move you into Chillpreneur mode.

Denise talks about the ‘Keyless life’, which was a concept I’d never heard her talk about previously. “The idea is to reduce any unnecessary friction in your daily life, so you can use your energy for other things.” and Denise talks about how she made her life keyless and what you should consider in your own.

This part of the book also goes into burnout and really encourages you to think about your well-being, because with you there is no business.

Finally to end this part, Denise outline the five essentials things to concentrate on if you truly want to have a chillpreneur business.

Part III: Money

Chapter 8: Big Pricing Mistakes
Chapter 9: How to Increase Your Prices Without Losing Clients
Chapter 10: Awkward Money Conversations Made Easy

Denise has never been one to shy away from discussing money, but it is a topic many women struggle with. Therefore, Denise talks you through how to increase your prices and how to deal with awkward money conversations. There are even some scripts to make your life super easy when it comes to putting up your prices, dealing with refunds and answering people who want to pick your brain.

Part IV: Marketing

Chapter 11: The 1 Percent Conversion Rule
Chapter 12: Cat Charming and Internet Dating
Chapter 13: Show up, Be Seen and Be Heard
Chapter 14: Make Offers, Make Money

As a marketer, I particularly found this part of the book interesting. Whereas Denise talks a lot about money and mindset, this was a great opportunity to hear her thoughts on how to market your business. Now if you are hoping for a breakdown of actually what Denise does you won’t get that. However, she shares some of her guiding principles. A quote that stood out to me was

“You’re talented and ambitious enough to make a success of your business. You’re good enough to hit all of your goals. You just don’t have enough eyeballs on your work right now – simple as that.”

For Denise marketing is definitely a numbers game. For years she has been building her email list, which has helped her to be successful in selling her own courses and other people’s courses too. In short, there are lots of ways to market your business, but essentially you need to be getting in front of more people and making the offer!

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM CHARELLE

Overall I really enjoyed Chillpreneur. I’ll be really honest and say that I was hesitant to read Chillpreneur. As a member of Money Bootcamp, I knew Denise’s was writing her third book a long time before it was actually published. However, when it was finally available to buy I didn’t rush out to buy a copy. Whilst I respect the business Denise has built I wouldn’t describe my style, or my desired style, to be ‘Chill’. The title made me very much think of The 4-Hour Work Week, which was a book I really didn’t agree with.

However, I was pleasantly surprised. Denise mentions in her books about storytelling being one of her strengths and it definitely is. Denise has a great way of talking about a concept, showing how she has applied the concept and then showing you to apply it to your own life.

WHO WOULD I RECOMMEND READS CHILLPRENEUR

Chillpreneur is a great book for aspiring and current entrepreneurs. I especially think it would be valuable for entrepreneurs who are currently struggling. Throughout the book, Denise is constantly writing “you”. It feels as if she is beside you and is constantly trying to reassure you that you can be successful and can absolutely become a chillpreneur.
