THE BEST WAY TO MARKET YOUR FINANCIAL COACHING BUSINESS ONLINE

If you think I’m going to give you a silver bullet to marketing your financial coaching business and say “Start a Podcast” “Post daily on LinkedIn” or “Do weekly webinars” then I’m sorry to disappoint you but that isn’t what you are going to get from me.

The fact is there are many ways to market your financial coaching business online and ALL of them work. What you have to determine is what will work for YOU.

The level of success other financial coaches experience using a specific marketing channel or platform is a combination of their strategy for the channel or platform, their strengths, and in some cases when they got started.

Here is the honest truth – there is no one BEST way to market your financial coaching business online. The fact is if you are marketing your own business it isn’t just about choosing the best marketing channels (such as email marketing, digital advertising or affiliate marketing). You have to choose the right marketing channels for your business and for you.

Let me explain a bit more. There are examples of financial coaches who have built their businesses on the back of blogging, podcasting, YouTubing, SEO, Pinterest, digital adverts, and every single social media platform out there. But those that have seen the most success have leaned into their strengths.

So rather than thinking one platform or channel is going to ‘save your business’ or ‘be the secret to massive success’ you need to work out what mix of marketing channels and platforms make sense for your business, your ideal client, and you.

Now I know it might be overwhelming to have all of the marketing options back on the table so here are 4 questions you should ask yourself to work out what is the best way to market your financial coaching business.

Question 1: What marketing channels or platforms will showcase my business best?

The first thing you want to do is make sure that the channels or platforms you choose will showcase your business as well as possible. The best way to put it is it makes sense for a photographer to use Pinterest, Instagram and a blog (all marketing channels and platforms that work well with visual elements) rather than a podcast and twitter (which are more aural and text-based).

Now as a financial coach, the reality is most marketing channels and platforms will showcase your business well. You’ll be able to showcase your business well either through text, video or your voice.

I know that isn’t helpful, but asking the other questions will help you narrow down what to focus on.

Question 2: Will a marketing channel or platform enable me to reach enough of my ideal client?

There is no point showcasing your business in a great light on a platform or channel where your ideal client isn’t. It doesn’t matter how good your marketing is if it isn’t being seen by enough of your ideal client then it won’t help you generate the number of sales you want. So it is important to understand what platforms and channels your ideal client use.

Again this will probably leave you with a few options as most ideal clients are on multiple social media platforms and will consume content and adverts in multiple places. Which is why you then need to ask yourself the next question.

Question 3: What marketing channels or platforms play to my strengths?

This is a question that is important to ask if right now you are solely responsible for your marketing, or you are still playing a major role in terms of creation. If you love writing then think about blogging and using Twitter or LinkedIn. If you love talking think about having your own podcast, being a guest on other people’s podcasts. If you enjoy creating videos think about using YouTube or creating videos on a social media platform like TikTok, Instagram or Facebook.

Focusing on the type of content you find easiest to make will help massively. It is important to note that you shouldn’t focus on your strengths first. For example, just because you like to chat you shouldn’t dive into having a podcast. The order of the questions is purposeful. Think about your business. Think about your ideal client. And then think about you.

This should mean you now have some options that tick all 3 boxes. But before you run off and start marketing there is one really important thing you need to check.

Question 4: Does the selection of marketing channels enable the whole buyer to happen?

If you’ve never come across the buyer journey (also referred to as the customer journey) it is where you think of all the steps it will take for someone who has never heard of your business before to become aware of your business and then all the touchpoints they’ll need to experience before buying.

You can map this out in a few ways:

Awareness > Interest > Desire > Action

Awareness > Engagement > Conversion

You need to look at the marketing channels and see if it is possible for someone to complete a journey.

For example, some ways to create awareness are guest podcasting, joint live videos on a social media platform, digital advertising (prospecting ads) or SEO.

For engagement, you could use email marketing and social media.

Then for conversion, you might be leading people to a sales page or sales call.

Look through the channels you’ve got and make sure you can see how someone can become aware of you, can deepen their understanding of your company and services, build a desire to work with you and then buy.

If you are happy that the channels or platforms you chose after asking the first 3 questions allow you to achieve that then congratulations you are ready to market your business. If you aren’t happy with the mix of channels or platforms then keep on going until you are.

That’s it! You now know the best way to market your financial coaching business online.

The fact is you have so many options when it comes to marketing your financial coaching business. They key is to ensure that the marketing platforms or channels you choose work for your business your ideal client and you. And of course, they will enable the whole buyer journey to happen.

I would love to hear in the comments what mix of marketing channels or platforms you are going to use to market your financial coaching business.
