Facebook Ads have revolutionised the world of advertising. As someone with an advertising background, it is amazing to see how Facebook Ads have changed the face of advertising. Facebook has enabled anyone to be able to create and run adverts from such a low entry point.
In my mind, Facebook Ads offer businesses large and small amazing opportunities. One of the reasons I love Facebook Ads is because of how much control you have over the targeting. However, not all Facebook Ads are equal.
A type of advert I specifically like is a retargeting advert. A retargeting advert is where you will serve an advert based on a previous action. There are lots of different retargeting strategies you try, especially if you have the Facebook Pixel installed on your website. But one of my favourite retargeting strategies at the moment involves retargeting people who have watched your Facebook Live.
This type of advert is perfect for you if:
- You have regularly been doing Facebook Lives on your official Facebook Page
- You ran a challenge and delivered content through Facebook Live
- You have delivered a masterclass through Facebook Live
With this sort of advert, you have the option of being able to retarget people who have watched your video. And not just who have watched your video but you can set it to people who have watched 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of your video.

Facebook is making it super easy for you to work out who is interested in you enough to watch a x% of your videos.
There are numerous ways that this type of advert can be used within your overall marketing strategy. Here are two ways you can use this type of Facebook Ad examples you could try.
1 – Using it to increase your mailing list
Maybe you have a massive Facebook following, but a small email list and at the moment you are focusing on your building your list. You can set it so that people who have watched 50% or more of any of your videos in the last month are sent an advert that specifically encourages them to join your mailing list.
2 – Using it to increase your sales
Maybe you have been running a 5-day challenge or delivered an online masterclass that was closely aligned with one of your offerings (eg course, digital product or coaching programme). Now you can select those specific Live videos and create an advert promoting that specific offering to people who watched at least 75% of your Live video.
Why I love this type of advertising
As I mentioned earlier, I love Facebook Ads and think there are so many wonderful applications. Never before has there been so many ways for a small business owner to run targeted adverts by themselves. The reason I’m such a fan of running video retargeting adverts is because it is an easy way to advertise to your warm audience.
In the beginning, it is likely your Facebook Ads are focused on building the awareness of your business. You want to increase the reach of your brand and that involves putting adverts in front of a cold audience. Now it can be a targeted cold audience (you can select to serve ads to people who have interests which means that they are more likely to be interested in your business but still when they see your advert they may never have heard of you), but it is still a cold audience.
By retargeting people who have watched your videos you know it is people who are interested in the content you are providing AND, most importantly, they are interested in hearing about it from you.
This means you can be highly targeted and overall ends up being a highly cost-effective type of marketing.
