Before I delve into WHY blogging for your business is beneficial I want to quickly discuss the difference between being a blogger and blogger for your business.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING A BLOGGER AND BLOGGING FOR BUSINESS?

According to WordPress a blog is,

“an abbreviated version of “weblog,” which is a term used to describe websites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information. A blog features diary-type commentary and links to articles on other websites, usually presented as a list of entries in reverse chronological order.”

On the surface you might not spot the difference between someone who is blogging for the purpose of blogging and someone who is blogging for business. However, the difference is in the intention.

Now you get hobby bloggers and professional bloggers. Usually a hobby blogger is blogging for fun (although now some people are hobby bloggers aiming to be professional bloggers) about things that are genuinely interested in. A professional blogger is someone who make money from their blog. Most commonly a professional blogger will make money from advertising and affiliate links (although some bloggers will also sell products and/or services too).

Someone who is blogging for business will be blogging with the purpose of attracting their idea client or customer to the website. Usually if you are blogging for business it will be a part of your overall content marketing strategy. You don’t need to gain masses of traffic because you aren’t relying on making money from advertising and affiliate links. Instead, when you are blogging for business even just attracting a few specific visitors can be profitable for your business depending on the pricing of your products or services.

Hopefully you now understand the difference between being a blogger and blogging for business so I’ll now share the reasons why you should blog for your business.

7 BENEFITS OF BLOGGING FOR YOUR BUSINESS

1) BLOGGING HELPS YOUR SEO

Google likes websites that have fresh content so if you are regularly blogging then Google should like your website more. Over time this should help your website to rank higher in Google. Higher ranking means more people will become aware of your website and visit your website.

Also, when you are blogging you are building the depth of your website. If you have a good content marketing strategy (If you don’t have one yet I can help you with that) then you’ll be writing blog posts that will help you to rank for different keywords. Having multiple blog posts that are ranking for different keywords will result in you appearing in more searches and more people visiting your website.

In addition, as you write more blog posts you’ll be able to do more linking (both internally and externally). This can potentially mean people spend longer on your website (which Google likes) and also help show your website in the broader context of the world wide web (which again Google likes).

2) IT HELPS DRIVE HIGH-QUALITY TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE

There is no point having a wonderful website that no one visits. As a website owner you should also be looking at ways to drive more traffic to your website and ideally high-quality traffic. As I mentioned in reason 1 having a blog improves your SEO and that should overall improve the volume of traffic that comes to your website. However, a good blog post can result in high-quality traffic to your website. This is because a blog post can be very detailed about something very specific. This means whether the blog post appears in search, is linked to on another website or even shared on social media the person who decides to click through will be specifically interested in the topic of that blog post (which should directly link to your business).

3) BLOGGING ALLOWS YOU TO ANSWER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS IN AN ACCESSIBLE PLACE

Do you get asked the same question about your business over and over again? If so then blogging will be perfect for you. For example, people often asked me about how I created my content. As a result, I wrote a blog post entitled Content Creation: The tools and and equipment I used to create content. Now when someone asks them that question I can direct them to the blog post.

Having blog posts that answer frequently asked questions will save you time and it also means that you are providing people with great value. When you write blog posts for your frequently asked questions you have the time to create a really thorough answer. In the blog post I wrote on content creation I was able to go into great detail about everything I use for content. I’ve also got links, which makes it super easy for someone wanting to check out the software or buy the equipment I use.

4) IT GIVES PEOPLE A REASON TO RETURN TO YOUR WEBSITE

When you are regularly blogging on your website you are giving people a reason to return to your website. We’ve all been to wonderful looking websites that have essentially been the same for years. They might tell you exactly what the business offers and that is great. However, as an individual there is no need for me to return as I have nothing to gain from visiting the website again.

If your website has a blog section that is regularly updated people know there is a value in returning. They know when they come back there will be new posts to read. This is great as a business owner as most people don’t buy the first time they visit someone’s website. By giving someone a reason to return to your website multiple times you are giving them a chance to get to know you better, to learn more from you and ultimately buy from you.

5) BLOGGING POSITIONS YOU AS AN AUTHORITY IN YOUR INDUSTRY

Nowadays it is very easy to pay someone to create you a shiny website and most people know that. Therefore, most people are looking for further evidence to show you are actually an expert. Blogging regularly will enable you to demonstrate your expertise and position yourself as an authority. With each blog post you have the ability to share your thoughts and advice on areas relevant to your industry. People will be able to read your blog posts and see that you are an expert. Also, as you write more blog posts there is a compound effect. Essentially you are building a body of work that shows you are an authority on the topic.

6) IT PROVIDES INTERESTING CONTENT TO BE ABLE TO SHARE ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND IN YOUR EMAILS

If you are using social media marketing or email marketing in your business then blogging will help you out there too. When you are regularly writing blog posts for your business you have new content that you can share with your followers and mailing list. This is a great way of being able to mix up messages that are sales driven with content that is value-packed and helpful.

7) BLOGGING GIVE PEOPLE MORE REASONS TO SHARE YOUR WEBSITE

Traditionally word-of-mouth was the most precious type of marketing possible. There is something so powerful about someone we trust telling us about X or Y. If we trust that person we trust their recommendations and are much more likely to act on the recommendation than if we have seen an advert. Marketers know that and that is why find ways to encourage word-of-mouth is key.

When you have a blog you are giving your readers the opportunity to become brand ambassadors and recommend you to others. It could be as simple as you have written one blog post that they found useful and they share it. Or it could be that they love your blog as a whole and so when someone mentions they are looking for help with X they respond “x writes about that all the time you should check out their blog”.

There you have it! You now know the 7 reasons why you should be blogging for your business.
