What does being consistent on social media mean?
There is a big focus on being consistent with social media, but what does that actually mean? Consistency on social media usually means two things.
Consistency in content
One way to assess consistency is in relation to the content that is being posted. Does all of your content feel as if it has been made by the same brand? This means being consistent in terms of colours, imagery, tone of voice, messaging etc.
Consistency in frequency
Another way to assess consistency is in relation to the frequency that you are posting on social media. How many times are you posting on a daily or weekly basis?
For the purposes of this blog post I’ll be focusing on how to be more consistent on social media in relation to the frequency of your posts.
HOW TO BE MORE CONSISTENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA
1. Decide on a frequency that is realistic to manage
If you currently have a frequency that you are struggling to stick to then it is time to adjust your frequency goals. Maybe right now you are trying to post once a day because that’s what has been recommended, but on average you post 3-5 times a week. In this situation, I would recommend you stop aiming to post once a day. Instead, decide to post 4 times per week. Stick to that for a month. Then when you are consistent at that you can then add in an extra post per week until you’ve worked your way back up to your original goal of 7 posts per week.
The fact is when you are trying to be consistent on social media the best thing you can is to slowly increase the quantity of content you are creating on a weekly basis. Going from 1 post per week to 7 posts per week is a mammoth task. Increasing your quantity in increments will mean you are more likely to be able to manage the volume of content you need to create and actually manage to be consistent with your posting.
2. Dedicate a specific time per week to create your content
If you are running a business and trying to create social media content for your business then it is easy for social media content creation to be at the bottom of your to-do list and you’ve never manage to get that far down the list. Instead of it just being something on your to-do list create an appointment for it in your diary and show up for that in the same way you would a meeting that involved another person.
3. Have a plan for your social media content
One of the major reasons business owners struggle to be consistent with posting on social media is they don’t have the time. Yet all too often I talk to business owners who waste significant amounts of time because they don’t know what they should be creating. Having a dedicated time in your diary to create content is great, but to make the most of that time you should know what you need to create in that time.
If you don’t already have a plan then check you can grab my free 2023 content marketing plan workbook by filling in your details below. This will help you create a plan for your social media marketing, as well as your emails and long-form content.
4. Batch create your content
As already mentioned creating social media content can be time-consuming. To be as time-efficient as possible you should batch create your content. This is where you create multiple social media posts back to back. This means that in your dedicated time to create you’ll pull up your plan and then start creating. Let’s image you are creating content for Instagram and your weekly plan involves 2 carousel, 2 Reels and 2 photographs. You should make the content that is of the same type back to back.
For example, log into Canva and make the two sets of graphics needed for your carousels. Then set up your phone to record your two Reels. And then finally go through your phone, send your two photographs to Lightroom, edit as necessary and export. Then write the captions and choose the appropriate hashtags for all the posts.
Creating your content following the structure is above is going to be much more efficient that creating the graphics for one carousel, writing the captions and then finding the hashtags. And then setting up your camera to create one Reel, editing it, writing the caption and choosing your hashtags.
Especially when you need time to get prepared (getting ready for video) or using a specific type of software it is better to create as many posts as possible in that format.

5. Schedule your content
You’ve got the aim of being consistent on social media and posting at a specific time, but sometimes that time doesn’t work for your life. It could be a time when you don’t want to be working or it could be a time when you are working with clients so can’t physically post in real-time. Luckily you don’t need to post in real-time in order to be consistent. You can schedule your content in advance.
On the whole, it is possible to schedule content in advance either natively through the specific social media platform or through a third-party scheduler.
If you are just creating content on one social media platform then using the native scheduling function on a platform is the best way to go.
If you are creating content across multiple social media platforms and you repurpose your content across platforms then go for a third-party scheduler. My social media scheduler of choice is Later. This allows you to post across Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok.

6. Have external accountability
Everything you’ve read so far will help you to be more consistent on social media, but if you are serious about being more consistent the best thing you can do is get external accountability. The reason why most business owners aren’t consistent on social media is because they don’t think there are any negative repercussions. They say to themselves “It won’t make a difference if I don’t post today”. Having external accountability changes that.
When you know someone else is watching what you are posting and knows what you are meant to be doing the stakes are higher and you drastically increase the likelihood of you being consistent.
