How to attract your dream clients

Want to know how to attract your dream clients? One of the reasons I love running my own business is that I get to choose who I work with. If you are an online, service-based, business the reality is the clients you decide to work with will play a major role in the level of fulfilment and enjoyment you get from your business. That’s why I put a lot of emphasis on not being fully booked with just anyone who will pay you but on getting fully booked with dream clients. As a result, I often get asked “How do I attract my dream clients?” which lead to me writing this blog post. Keep on reading to find out how to attract your dream clients.

HOW TO ATTRACT YOUR DREAM CLIENTS

Define who your dream client is

Before you can attract your dream clients you need to know who your dream clients are. You might have come across the idea of creating an ideal customer avatar (ICA). Creating an ideal customer avatar is common practice when a business has created a new product or service. Creating an ideal customer avatar is an exercise that helps you to get clear on who the product or service is designed for. I highly recommend you create an ideal customer, or client, avatar for every service or product that you have in your business.

However, since the focus here is on attracting your dream clients then I would recommend you go a step beyond creating an ideal customer avatar. An ideal customer avatar focuses on who the product or service is great for. Now the fact is that you might have a service that would work for lots of different clients. But your dream client isn’t going to be everyone who could benefit from your service. Your dream client will be a smaller group of people within your ideal customer avatar. Here the focus is on who do you want to work with.

You’ll want to define your dream client using a combination of demographic and psychographic characteristics.

Demographics may include things such as:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Location
  • Education level
  • Relationship status
  • Parental status
  • Annual Income

Psychographics may include:

  • Personality
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Values
  • Beliefs
  • Attitudes

You should combine all of this information into a one-pager so you can quickly reference in the future.

Get to know your dream client as much as possible

Once you’ve got super specific about who your dream client is you’ll need to ensure you know your dream client as much as possible. The better you understand your dream client the easier it will be to ensure that you are marketing your business in the right places and you have marketing that will directly speak to them.

You probably already know a fair bit about your dream client, but it is important that you aren’t making assumptions, which is why I always advise doing some market research. My preference is primary research that you conduct yourself. You can do this by doing interviews or by getting your dream client to complete a survey or questionnaire.

Ensure your brand appeals to your dream clients

There is no point in having a service that appeals to your dream client if your branding doesn’t.  For the majority of online service providers, the fact is that someone else offers exactly the same, or a very similar, service.  The reason why a client will choose one business over another is usually due to their brand. Hopefully, you’ve already done some branding work, but if you haven’t then now is the time to do so. As a minimum, you need to choose 3 to 5 brand values and ensure that your marketing is aligned with those values.

Once you’ve chosen your brand values compare those to the values of your dream client. Do they align? They don’t have to be the same, but if they are the opposite then you have a problem.

Create marketing that will speak specifically to your dream client

If you want to attract your dream clients you’ll need to ensure that your marketing, and advertising, directly speaks to your dream client. By this point, you should have a good understanding of your dream client and how your business can help them.  Here are some ways that you can make sure that your marketing specifically speaks to your dream client.

WEBSITE

Your website is your official online home for your business and it is the perfect place to ensure you are brand is super clear and that your whole site is designed with your dream client in mind.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media marketing offers the opportunity for you to attract, and nurture, your dream clients. Your social media marketing will need to do multiple things simultaneously. Firstly, you can use social media to raise your visibility and introduce new people to your business. Depending on the platforms you use you’ll need to think about how to increase the reach of your posts. This could be anything from using hashtags, doing collaborations (such as joint live videos) and asking your current audience to tag someone or share with someone.  Secondly, with your current audience, you’ll need to have marketing that speaks directly to your dream clients so they realise that you want to work with them and that your services or products are perfect for them.

EMAIL

Email is a great place to attract your dream client. Unlike other forms of marketing, it is a fairly close form of marketing. It goes directly into a person’s inbox and someone can believe the message was meant just for them,  Firstly, you should make sure if you have any lead magnets to get people onto your mailing list that it is specific enough to be attracting your dream client in the first place. Then once they are on your list you can send emails that make it super obvious who you love working with and allows your readers to self-identify before getting in touch to work with you.

LONG-FORM CONTENT

With your long-form content, whether that be YouTube videos, blog posts or podcast episodes, you should create content that directly addresses the issues your dream client has. Your long-form content should be optimised for search. This means that new people will find your content when searching for help with those specific areas. For example, you might be reading this blog post right now because you put into google ‘attract dream clients’. Make it clear who your dream client is in your marketing

Your dream client shouldn’t just be something you know. If you want to attract your dream client then make it easy for people to know if they are right for you.

For example, on your sales page for your services you can make very clear who your services are and aren’t for. If you have an application form to work with you then you can reiterate who the service is and isn’t for and ask them to confirm that they meet the criteria.

Reference current and past dream clients in your marketing

If are currently or have already had the opportunity to work with a dream client then if possible you should reference that dream client in your marketing.  Referencing clients in your marketing is a great way for other people to imagine working with you anyway, but when you reference your dream clients you can emphasise exactly why you loved working with this client. By highlighting the characteristics that made a client amazing to work with you are able to easily show clients you love working with and attract more clients like that.

That’s it! You now know how to attract your dream client.

Attracting your dream client can take some time, but the more you understand your dream client and the more specific your marketing is the easier you’ll attract your dream clients. I hope reading this blog post has helped you to get clearer about what you need to do in order to attract your dream client.
