What is the Ask Method?

Very early on in the book, Ryan explains what the Ask Method is. He writes

“The Ask Method is a system to ask intentionally-designed questions to help you figure out exactly what your customer wants-and the exact language to use to communicate with them”.

The method relies on using surveys.

As business owners and entrepreneurs, it is vital to solve people’s problems. We are told that you need to give people want they want, but Ryan says the problem is that “People don’t know what they want”. Therefore, it isn’t always helpful to directly ask people what they want. This is why he has created a series of questions that helps uncover what people want in what could be described as a counterintuitive way.

The first part of the book is mainly Ryan talking about his journey and how he came up with the Ask Methodology.

Then in the second part of the book, Ryan goes into great detail about the Ask Methodology. The Ask Methodology is made up of 4 different surveys. Firstly Ryan briefly explains the four different surveys and how they work together. Then he explains each survey in great detail showing you how to set it up and even a point how to analyse your results.

Having the surveys is one thing, but you need to get people filling them in. So once you have designed all the survey Ryan then also walks you step-by-step through the entire setup process in terms of the landing pages you need to create (and what should be on them) and the emails that you need to send.

Then at the end Ryan shares 3 case studies so you can see exactly how other people have applied the Ask Methodology and the impact it had on their businesses.

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM CHARELLE

Overall, I enjoyed Ask by Ryan Levesque. Whilst Ask is Ryan’s first book, I had actually read his second book Choose (read my review here) first. This meant I already knew I liked Ryan’s writing style and the way his brain works. If I’m honest I preferred Choose to Ask, but that is mainly because Choose brought new ideas into my life, whereas Ask is used my lots of online entrepreneurs already so I have seen the tactics being used already. Personally I didn’t need the first part of the book. However, Ryan goes into great detail in the second part of the book that I would really recommend the book. Whilst Ryan does sell services around the Ask Methodology that doesn’t mean he has shortchanged readers of the book. In fact, I was really impressed with the details in terms of all the different surveys, pages and emails you need to set the whole methodology.

WHO WOULD I RECOMMEND READS ASK BY RYAN LEVESQUE

I would recommend this book to aspiring and current entrepreneurs, solopreneurs and business owners. Whilst it would be great to use the Ask Methodology from the beginning of your business it can be implemented at any time. Some of the methodology focuses on knowing what people want, which is useful for new business owners to offer the right products and/or services. However, an established entrepreneur could use that knowledge in order to work out what other products and / or services they could be offering. Furthermore, some of the other surveys help you to be able to segment your audience, customers and clients. Segmentation is something I’m really passionate about and can help every business owner no matter what stage you are at.

One thing to note is that the Ask Methodology is done through online surveys. This doesn’t mean you have to be an online business for the methodology to work, but that is something to keep in mind.
